The challenge
Growing up, John faced many challenges because of his albinism. People often treated him differently, judged him because of his appearance, and underestimated his abilities. As a child, he struggled with confidence and frequently felt discouraged by the way others viewed him.
The dangers went beyond discrimination. At one point in his childhood, John was nearly kidnapped by individuals who targeted him because of John’s albinism. The experience left a lasting impact and reminded him of the serious risks that many people with albinism face in parts of Africa.
Combined with the rejection he experienced from his father at an early age, these experiences made it difficult for John to believe in his own potential.
What helped
While waiting for a friend one day, John met his friend’s grandmother. She heard him singing and immediately noticed his talent. After listening to him, she encouraged him to continue pursuing music and told him that he had a special gift.
Her words came at a time when John was struggling with confidence and searching for direction. Unlike many people who focused only on his appearance, she focused on his ability. That simple conversation became a turning point in his life.
For the first time, someone made him feel that he had something valuable to offer the world. Her encouragement inspired him to take music seriously and gave him the confidence to pursue opportunities he might otherwise have ignored.
In their words
John Chiti’s story began with rejection, but it did not end there.
Born in Zambia with albinism, John entered a world where many people misunderstood the condition. His father could not understand why his son looked different and, influenced by common myths about albinism, eventually left the family.
As he grew older, John faced many of the challenges experienced by people with albinism. He was bullied by other children, judged by strangers, and often made to feel different because of his appearance. The rejection he experienced both at home and in society affected his self-esteem and made childhood especially difficult.
Everything began to change through an unexpected encounter. While waiting for a friend one day, John met his friend’s grandmother. After hearing him sing, she told him that he had a remarkable voice and encouraged him to pursue music. What seemed like a simple conversation became a life-changing moment. Her belief in him gave him confidence at a time when he desperately needed it.
Music became more than a hobby. It became a way for John to express himself, heal from painful experiences, and prove that his future would not be defined by prejudice. Through determination and perseverance, he transformed childhood adversity into motivation.
Today, John Chiti is one of Zambia’s most well-known musicians and advocates for people with albinism. His story demonstrates how a single act of encouragement can change the course of a person’s life and how resilience can overcome even the deepest challenges.
