UN independent expert urges member states to fund albinism rights agenda

A new report submitted to the Human Rights Council outlines seven priorities for protecting people with albinism across 2026 and calls for sustained funding from member states.

The UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism, Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, has submitted a new thematic report urging member states to adopt the regional albinism action plan with stable, multi-year funding.

The report outlines seven priorities for 2026: criminal accountability for ritual attacks, health systems access including skin cancer screening, low-vision services in public schools, protection of women and girls with albinism, humanitarian response in conflict zones, national data collection, and community-led monitoring mechanisms.

"States have made progress," the report notes, "but progress without resources stalls."

Regional albinism networks welcomed the report and called on donor states to match words with sustained programmatic funding.
