Up to 40 bursaries covering tuition and low-vision assistive technology are available for young people with albinism entering South African universities and TVET colleges.
The Albinism Society of South Africa (ASSA) has opened its 2026 bursary programme, offering up to 40 bursaries to young people with albinism entering university or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
The bursary covers tuition, a contribution to accommodation, and — critically — low-vision assistive technology including screen magnification and recommended eyewear. Applicants are assessed on academic merit, financial need, and a short personal statement.
ASSA executive director Nomasonto Mazibuko said the inclusion of assistive technology reflects an important shift. "A bursary that doesn't cover the tools you need to actually read in class isn't really a bursary."
Applications close in February. Previous beneficiaries are prioritised as peer mentors for new cohorts.
