A new national teacher training module piloted this term includes safeguarding, low-vision awareness, and anti-bullying guidance for supporting learners with albinism.
Malawi's Ministry of Education has rolled out a new teacher training module that includes, for the first time, a dedicated section on supporting learners with albinism.
The module covers safeguarding, low-vision awareness, classroom accommodations including seating, lighting, and print size, and anti-bullying guidance. It is being piloted in 120 primary schools this term before national rollout.
The module was developed with input from Standing Voice and the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM), with review by the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare.
APAM leaders said the programme is a meaningful step after years of advocacy — and that its real impact will depend on whether follow-up mentoring and materials reach rural schools.
