Cuba's Holguín builds local support for people with albinism

In Holguín, Cuba's third-largest province, a coordinated programme is quietly working to close the gap between policy and daily life for people with albinism.

Radio Ángulo reported that the initiative brings together dermatologists, ophthalmologists, and community health workers to provide regular specialist check-ups. People with albinism in the province receive UV-protective clothing and sunscreen through the public health system, the outlet said.

Care and visibility

The programme is not limited to medical services. According to Radio Ángulo, local authorities have worked with schools and workplaces to raise awareness about albinism, specifically to reduce the social stigma that can follow people with albinism into classrooms and employment.

Cuba's national framework recognises albinism as a condition requiring both health intervention and social protection, Radio Ángulo noted. Holguín's approach appears to put that framework into local practice — connecting individuals to services rather than leaving them to navigate the system alone.

Sunscreen and UV-protective clothing, the report indicated, are distributed as part of routine care rather than as exceptional provisions. That distinction matters: when protection is routine, the need for it becomes ordinary rather than stigmatised.

The province has also engaged civil society organisations and the Cuban Federation of Women in outreach efforts, according to the report. Community volunteers help identify people with albinism who have not yet connected with health services.
