Ghana Journalists Association adopts reporting framework for albinism coverage

A new voluntary code of practice asks Ghanaian journalists to avoid stigmatising language, consult community experts, and centre the voices of people with albinism in their coverage.

The Ghana Journalists Association, in partnership with national albinism advocacy organisations, has adopted a voluntary reporting framework for coverage of people with albinism.

The framework asks Ghanaian journalists to avoid stigmatising or sensationalist language, consult community experts before publishing, centre the voices of people with albinism in their coverage, seek consent before publishing photos especially of children, and refrain from promoting harmful myths even when reporting on attacks.

The framework is non-binding but the association will circulate it to newsrooms and include the material in its professional development programmes.

Press freedom advocates said the framework is a model other African journalist associations could adapt without infringing on editorial independence.
